If you live in studio apartment or one-room, two-rooms apartment you need to make it a place where all the things will be well organized and where you will feel comfortable and relaxed. Surely you don’t want to make it visually smaller, unorganized or narrow it down by choosing wrong furniture or colors.
So, wisely choosing how to decorate small apartment is very important. Here are some golden rules and great tricks how to organize small space:
It is highly recommended that you use bright colors to create an effect of spaciousness as bright colors enhance the space. It is best to use only one color for the walls to create impression of continuous space and reduce the feeling of multiple small spaces combined in one. Colorism is not the best choice but if you like colors use maximum three or four major colors for the whole apartment.
It is best to choose furniture in same color or in nuances of one color, again to create feeling of continuous space. Too many different colors and styles in furniture, visually fills up the space and makes it smaller.
Smaller items, like pillows, can be in strong, vivid colors to bring life and warmth in the room.
It is a good idea to choose shiny surfaces, shiny materials, in bright colors as they reflect light and that way they visually enhance the space. Try to avoid big prints and patterns as they will shrink the space and make it look chaotic.
If you really like intensive and more expressive wallpapers place only on one spot like an accent wall.
Big, hanging luster should be avoided as they will brake the space, and will draw attention and will become the main visual element which is not recommended. Instead of using big lightening element, you should choose small ceiling lights or many small lamps strategically allocated around the room. Places which are crowded or cluttered mostly should have the best lightening as it will make them seem big and tidy.
In small apartments glass is a very useful material. You can use it for doors or furniture parts like table surface. It greatly helps visually disburden the space.
Inside doors should be transparent, made of glass, to allow light to pass through it and create a feeling of bigger space. Sliding doors are excellent choice for small apartments.
You have to be very careful how you choose the furniture. Always measure before buying or for small apartments it is best if you order furniture to be made specially for your dimensions. Always try to get dual duty furniture, or furniture with double function like bed with drawers below or sofa convertible to bed or collapsible chairs. Avoid massive furniture pieces as it will eat up precious space. The closet is also best to be ordered and made specially for your place, and it is best to be up to the ceiling and with sliding doors. Don’t buy too much furniture, better keep it less than too much.
Furniture that is lifted up the floor has a floating effect, by leaving little free space an impression of depth is created like the space is flowing underneath these elements. This reduces the feeling of being in small space, so use elements with low legs and create the illusion of having more space beneath.
Mirrors can do miracles! Use them as much as possible but be careful not to exaggerate. Mirrors reflect light, double the space, make the room seem brighter, add depth to the space. They add great deal of quality in lightening the space specially if the space lacks in natural light.
You will probably hear or read this in all places where small apartment arrangement is mentioned: think vertically. Well, it is a true and you should listen to this advice. All space horizontally will be taken so using walls with shelves on them will be extremely useful. You can put shelves almost everywhere and get few more storage places inside your home. And shelves are really easy to install and come in all sizes and are really necessary in small spaces. Open shelves are recommended for leaving the view open to the eye.
Ideally the flooring should be the same in the whole apartment for creating continuous space. Also try to use light colors as it will help spread the reflected light around the apartment.
Cluttering things is the most unwanted thing in small apartments so get rid of things you don’t really use or need – unless you are emotionally attached to them. And always remember to keep your space clean to make it look bigger, specially clean the windows to let in as much natural light as possible.
